There stands an old temple on top of the hill. = An old temple stands on top of the hill.

There happened in an accident yesterday＝An accident happened in yesterday.

如果第一个例句正确的话，第二个句子也是正确的吗？

都对，there 引出倒装结构。

There stands an old temple on top of the hill. = An old temple stands on top of the hill.

There happened an accident yesterday＝An accident happened yesterday. （多写了一个 in，没有用 in 的道理。去掉）

There happened an accident yesterday. 我的印象里英语应该没有这个说法。你哪里看到的句子？不是所有的词都可以像 There stands an old temple on top of the hill这样推理。应该说There happened to be an accident yesterday.
