1.Before I came downstairs I had prepared myself very carefully for what I must say.

Before I came downstairs I had prepared myself very carefully for the thing that I must say.

2.I don't know what he is doing/said.

I don't know the thing that he is doing/said.

1.  Before I came downstairs I had prepared myself very carefully for what I must say.

2.  I don't know what he is doing/said.

---What is he doing?   What did he say?

---I don't know.
