连词也可以被副词修饰，more and more （越来越）就是修饰连词as if 的。又如，mainly because...，partly because...，only when...，only after...，only if...，especially when...，just as...，much like...（like 为连词或介词均可）等。我给网友梳理一下这个句子的演变情况：

I felt much like I were in a foreign country. 

I felt more like I were in a foreign country. （变much 为比较级）

I felt more and more like I were in a foreign country. （变递进程度比较）

I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. （用 as if 替换连词 like）

as表示像...那样的意思时，可以被副词much修饰。例如：

I felt much as I do when I'm flying upward toward the sun.

He felt much as an astronomer feels who has discovered a new planet

as if 其实是as分句和if分句的合并，即as if = as sb would do/be if . 例如：

He feels as if he were flying. = He feels as he would feel/do if he were flying.

所以，as if 从句作look 或 feel 的表语时可以被much的比较级more and more 修饰。
