2 时态用法疑问

As the birth rate decreases and life expectancy increases, there will be shortages in the job market. Consequently, a lot of ex-employees who thought they had finished their careers at 60 or whatever, will be called back to work.

请教曹老师： they had finished their careers 这里为什么要用过去完成时态，而不用can finish their careers一般现在时表示陈述一个事实？

who thought they had finished their careers at 60 or whatever 为定语从句修饰ex-employees. 即那些原本以为自己60岁退休后职业生涯就已经终结的前雇员们。由于thought为过去时，其宾语从句根据时态一致原则用过去完成时。这里指已经退休的人员。
