need to do sth 或者 don't need to do sth, 不定式表示的都是后于谓语时间的将来动作。而不定式的进行体to be doing表示与谓语时间同时的动作。在肯定句中，need to be doing sth, 意为我们需要正在做某事，即本需要在现在就做着某事，但实际上现在并没有在做。在否定句中，don't need to be doing sth. 意为本不必现在在做某事，而实际上正在做着某事。例如下面COCA例句：

Yeah, we work the biceps all the time when we need to be working the triceps!  本应锻炼三头肌，我们实际却一直在练二头肌。（本需要现在做的事情，现在并没有在做。）

 ..., and you really don't need to be killing these animals from helicopters。本不需要杀死这些动物，但实际上你们却一直在杀死这些动作。
