悬空不定式不能作宾补，所以，这个句子中 to spend 作 allow 的宾补，排除悬空不定式。to spend只能按照不及物动词理解，himself 为其逻辑主语。《韦氏词典》spend作不及物动词，有 have an orgasm的意思，即获得快感。
to be spent 为被动不定式作allow的宾补，反身代词为其被动的逻辑主语。即allow himself to be spent = allow himself to spend himself. 及物动词+反身代词作宾语，意为exhaust，wear out. 这里引申为尽情享受。
所以，如果一个人以适当的方式给别人提供了一个很好的笑话，就不要阻止他，而是让他高兴地以这种方式获得快感并尽情享受。
