这二个问句都是修辞性问句。否定形式的修辞性问句表达的是更为强调的肯定意义。

break oddly on the silence. 是比较老的书面语，一般出现在文学语言中。现代英语多用break the silence. oddly =strangely, 就句话的意思是：他的声音似乎很奇特地打破了沉寂。“Couldn't you like to do someone a good turn when you have the chance?”是否定疑问句，用could 表示责怪对方，这句话的意思：你就不能到时候帮个忙回报别人吗？用wouldn't 语气会弱一些，而且说话人并不一定知道对方不愿意这样做。用couldn't 说明说话人知道她一直就不愿意帮别人。
