Couldn't you like to do 如何理解这种结构?

She closed her eyes for a moment, and I thought she was going to faint. I was a little impatient with her; I had not suspected that she was so neurotic a woman. Then I heard Stroeve's voice again. It seemed to break oddly on the silence.

"Haven't you been in bitter distress once when a helping hand was held out to you? You know how much it means. Couldn't you like to do someone a good turn when you have the chance?"

请教老师: break oddly on the silence 为什么会有介词on出现?为什么不是 break oddly the silence 呢? 另外,Couldn't you like to do... 就是could(或couldn't) like to do 和我们常见的 would(或wouldn't) like to do 是一样的含义和用法吗?

"Haven't you been in bitter distress once when a helping hand was held out to you? You know how much it means. Couldn't you like to do someone a good turn when you have the chance?"

所以,couldn't you like to do应该按照肯定句去理解,你有可能也愿意帮助别人作为回报的。wouldn't you like to couldn't you like to中的would could 都是情态动词的推测性用法,然后用过去形式表示委婉,could would的区别只是说话人的自信程度不同。

break oddly on the silence. “Couldn't you like to do someone a good turn when you have the chance?

It seemed to break oddly on the silence.

Couldn't you like to do someone a good turn when you have the chance?

该搭配 would like to do,不可换成 could。
