go to the mountains （群山）

go to the mountain（那一座山）

在很多情况下用复数，是因为在一个山脉中，有多座山，就是我们常说的群山。

这是英语惯用，go to the mountains (泛指）一般都用复数。如：I live in the mountains. 也许因为山基本都是连绵不断（这只是我的猜测）其实，这些惯用，你即使问母语的人也不一定能准确解释，他们也只是凭感觉，有时会牵强附会。如果你要强调去了某一座山（特指），当然可以用单数。比如： We went to the Yanshan mountain near Beijing last week. 或 We went to a mountain near Beijing last week. （这里指去了某一座山）。
