The plains stretched for as far as the eye could see.

我觉得这个用法在这里不太准确。如果用stretch for 后面要跟的具体距离的词。如 stretch for ten miles. 问题句子可以这样写：The plains stretched( / out /away )as far as the eye could see. 也就是说可以仅用stretch 或后面接out或away 都可以。as far as the eye could see. 意思是：一望无际。注意，这是习语，eye要用单数，前面the也不能少, 但也可以用can.
