如何理解这里用了虚拟语气as it were, against his will. ?

There was real passion in his voice, and in spite of myself I was impressed. I seemed to feel in him some vehement power that was struggling within him; it gave me the sensation of something very strong, overmastering, that held him, as it were, against his will. I could not understand. He seemed really to be possessed of a devil, and I felt that it might suddenly turn and rend him.

1)如何理解这里用了虚拟语气as it were, against his will. ?

2)这里用了be possessed of a devil, 按照词典用法,应该是具有一个魔鬼的能力,如果是be possessed by a devil 才是 被魔鬼附身的意思。

这是as if it were so的简略。

Seemingly, in a way, as in He was living in a dream world, as it were. A shortening of "as if it were so,"

通常后接by a devil. 但间或有用of a devil的。 如果要细扣,be possessed by a devil为被动语态,be possessed of a devil为系表结构。 He was surprised by the news. He was surprised at the news.
