It is exhilarating, but it is nearly impossible to explain to outsiders how the pieces fit together, which they often don't in any coherent way.请问这句话的which是不是在从句中没做任何成分？我记得定语从句which是一定要在从句中做成分的。这个they是指pieces吗，they是不是只可以指人？谢谢老师

which的先行词为 fit together, they指代the pieces. 如果改为并列句则为，and they often don't fit togerher in any coherent way.
再看一个which从句修饰动词的例句：
Tom dances well, which John doesn't. = but John doesn't dance well. which的先行词为dances well。
which引导非限制性关系分句，其先行词可以是名词，可以是整个主句内容。这是网友知道的。但实际上其先行词还可以是动词或形容词。
He is clever, which I am not. which的限定词为clever。
