go doing 是英语中一个很常用的表达，一般认为它主要用于表示日常活动、体育活动、户外活动等，如：

go biking, go boating, go camping, go climbing, go cycling, go exploring, go fishing, go golfing, go hiking, go hunting, go jogging, go climbing, go picnicking, go racing, go rowing, go running, go sailing, go shooting, go shopping, go sightseeing, go skating, go skiing, go surfing, go swimming 等。

但除此之外还有很广泛的用法。比如表示寻找意义（你的句子中的 go doing 大致符合此用法）。如：

In June all the students go looking for jobs. 6 月份所有的学生都要找工作了。

They went searching for clues but came up dry. 他们搜寻线索，结果却一无所获。

另外，go doing 还可以表示收集意义。如：

Anne’s going fruit-picking this weekend. 这个周末安妮要去摘水果。

Here we go gathering nuts in May. 五月我们去采坚果儿。

其实，除此之外，go doing 还有很多其他用法，需平时观察和积累。再举一例就是表示方式。如：

She went sobbing up the stairs. 她呜咽着上楼去了。

The ball went sailing over the garden fence. 球飞过了花园的围栏。

但是注意，go doing通常不用于表示具有明确开始时间与结束时间的活动，如不能说go watching a football match等。
