2）由于可以说sb takes sometime to do sth, 因此，上面如果改成 taking their time to look at all of the elements...可否？
原句...taking their time looking at all of the elements 和 改写句...taking their time to look at all of the elements 在理解上，“究竟”有何不同呢？

1 there are 告诉你主语是复数。所以scientists为主语，后面的doing只能是现在分词作定语。如果你把doing分析为动名词，那么就是动名词复合结构作主语，there are 可以吗？你的分析显然是错误的。这么明显结构，你视而不见，抱怨你搞不清，我看你是懒得动脑子。如果你是我的学生，是要打板子的。
sb take time doing sth. 某人花时间做某事，这里time不说具体时间长度，只说把时间花在哪方面了。动词作方面状语。
it took sb time to do sth, sb take a certain length of time to do sth. 都是表示做某事需要多长时间。这里的时间必须有具体的时间长度，不能光说time.
所以这是二个意义完全不通的句型，不可互换。我告诫你多次，不要随意改动原句，你改动的结果十有八九是错误的。你要从你看到的新的句型中学习，而不是总往你已学过那个方向改动，这样你不会进步的。

3.that need to be looked at 是 elements 的定语从句。
以上-ing，都是现在分词，不是动名词。
