1. at the beginning （后面不接 of）的意思是“起初”，可以与in the beginning 替换，两者没有什么区别，但是在现代英语中多用前者。例如：I thought he loved me; perhaps he did in the beginning. 我以为他爱我，也许开始时他确实是爱我的。（《朗文高级英语应试词典》p.180）

2. 根据葛传槼教授编著的《英语惯用法词典》，“begin at the beginning”不能改为“begin in the beginning”；说世界的开端必须用in the beginning，不用at the beginning， 如 In the beginning there were no men nor animals nor plants.

3.《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第8版指出：at the beginning （of）指开始的时间和起点。in the beginning等于at first, 与后来相比。

4. 可以说 at the beginning of，不能说in the beginning of ，例如：There's a short poem at the beginning of every chapter. 每一章的开始都有一首短诗。/ The town was founded at the beginning of the 12th century.  该镇建立于12世纪之初。（《朗文高级英语应试词典》p.180）

【参考】虽然2008年7月第1版《外研社英汉多功能词典》(p.183)有in the beginning of的用法实例 （in the beginning of this century 本世纪初），但是最好不要模仿。否则，在考试中容易被判为错误。
