老师您好！新概念英语第二册L80课文中有一句话：Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. 1.其中粗体所标的分句，可不可以把it is省略掉? 变成 Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as today，.... 2.可不可以只把it省略掉，变成Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as is today，....

你的句子中，it is 是可以省略的。如果主句和从句比较的是不同状语情况下某性质的不同，则从句可以省略主谓结构，只保留状语。从句省略的主谓结构可以和主句时态不同，但结构是相同的。例如下面COCA语料库例句：
Cellular phones were not as prevalent as today.
This would explain why modern diseases were not as prevalent as today, before 1950.
During much of that time temperatures were the same as today, and sometimes lower.
They will not only be as bloated as today, they will be more bloated.
Marriage has never been so devalued as today.
但是你不可以只省略it，而保留is。这就是语法错误了。
比较分句只有在下面二种情况下才可以省略主语而只保留谓语动词：
1 比较分句的主语为比较对应项（此时主语必须省略）。例如：
As many people came as was invited.
2 比较分句的主语为嵌入分句，即形式主语it和外置的that从句或不定式分句作真正主语。例如：
The party went on as smoothly as was planned. (=as it was planned that it should go on)
除了以上二种情况，如果一个比较分句省略主语而只保留谓语动词，就是语法错误。
你的句子中，比较对应项是表语，而不是主语，比较分句也不是嵌入分句，所以不可以省略主语而保留谓语动词。

本句不可以省略 it is。比较讲究“对称”，也就是说，比较的成分必须对称，网友这个句子，比较的成分是两个时间状语（ in those days 和today）。在对称前提下，可以省略主、从句完全重复的成分。虽然主语 travelling 和 it 是一致的，但前者为过去时间的谓语动词was，后者是现在时间的谓语动词is ，时态不一致，此时也不可省略。所以必须保留不同时态的谓语动词，有了谓语动词，主语 it 也要跟着有。
如果谓语动词及其时态完全一致，为避免重复，就可以省略，而且提倡省略。例如：
Weather is not as hot in the north as (it is) in the south.
In the north weather is not as hot as (it is) in the south.
