1. by posting a picture of herself with African-style knots in her hair on Instagram 是第一层修饰，作 marking 的方式状语。即：通过posting（贴出）来marking（纪念）。
2. by marking what would have been Notting Hill Carnival weekend by posting a picture of herself with African-style knots in her hair on Instagram 这是第二层修饰，整个介词短语作 appropriation 的定语。appropriation （盗用）虽然具有动作性，但毕竟是名词，所以作定语，不能看作原因状语。如果appropriate 用作动词（盗用），by...则是方式状语。
