it 是代词是还是形式主语的判断
In 1924 America's National Research Council sent two engineers to supervise a series of industrial experiments at a large telephone-parts factory called the Hawthorne Plant near Chicago. It hoped they would learn how stop-floor lighting affects workers' productivity. Instead, the studies ended up giving their name to the "Hawthorne effect", the extremely influential idea that the very act to being experimented upon changed subjects' behavior.
The idea arose because of the behavior of the women in the controversial Hawthorne plant. According to accounts of the experiments, their hourly output rose when lighting was increased, but also when it was dimmed. It did not matter what was done in the experiment;so long as something was changed, productivity rose. An awareness that they were being experimented upon seemed to be enough to alter workers' behavior by itself.
这里这个it是指前文所指的整个实验，还是做what was done in the experiment的形式主语？判断的根据是什么？不尽感激!!

It （形式主语）did not matter what was done in the experiment.（真正主语）
1. 如果 it 不是形式主语的话，那么what 从句怎么处理？作何成分？
2. what 从句是“间接疑问句”，而不是名词性关系分句时，才可以外置。所以，在理解和翻译时，what 带有疑问“什么”。
