I could well remember the scorn which the theories of the reasoner used then to excite in the practical man.
1. the scorn （蔑视）是remember 的宾语，也是which 定语从句的先行词。which 在定语从句中作 excite 的宾语（激起了蔑视）。
2. in the practical man：在讲求实际的人身上。
3. used to do sth. 以前曾经做某事。把 then暂时去掉。
【直译】我很清楚地记得推理者的理论曾经在讲求实际的人身上激起的蔑视。（纯粹按定语从句翻译）
【意译】我很清楚地记得，推理论者的理论曾经在讲求实际的人身上激起了蔑视。（按宾语从句翻译，把定语从句改为宾语从句，这样，excite 的宾语就清楚了：I could well remember that the theories of the reasoner used then to excite the scorn in the practical man.）
