其实前面两位老师（刘老师和凡哥老师）讲得很清楚了，用east等还是用eastern来修饰专有名词，主要是看你从哪个角度来理解，即是将其作为地理区域来看待（用eastern修饰）还是作为行政分区来看待(用east修饰)。很显然，西欧、东欧、南欧、北欧等，通常是被视为地理区域而非行政分区来看待的，所以在英语中通常说成 western Europe, eastern Europe, southern Europe, northern Europe。如：

Eastern Europe was important to Russia as a buffer against the West.东欧是俄罗斯与西方抗衡的重要缓冲。

These six countries are the geographical core of Western Europe. 这6 个国家处于西欧品地理中心。

You sometimes see oxen pulling carts in southern Europe. 在南欧，有时可看到用牛拉车。

The ozone layer is disappearing over northern Europe. 北欧上空的臭氧层正在消失。

虽然偶尔也可见到west Europe, east Europe, south Europe, north Europe，但很不普通，而且有不少辞书认为这样用的是错的。比如《柯林斯高级英语用法词典》就认为：

You do not talk about east Europe. You say eastern Europe.

但有趣的是，同样在柯林斯系的词典中却又可以找到反例（即是将其视为行政区域了，所以East还大写了）：

The President set the targets for the future to promote friendship with East Europe. 总统确定了在未来加强同东欧的互助的目标。(柯林斯高级英语词典)
