用现在分词还是过去分词？后置定语？

CATTI二笔综合改错题

The one word that sums up the attitude of the silent filmmakers is enthusiasm,conveys most strongly before formulas took shape and when there was more room for experimentation.

我们都知道这里不能用conveys，要用其非谓语形式

答案是conveying，理由是现在分词作伴随状语。

我不这样认为，我认为答案应该是conveyed。百度出来，这题源自SAT，也是conveyed。

1.主句是主系表结构，被表达、被传递是表语enthusiasm，所以应该用过去分词conveyed表被动。

2.before formulas took shape and when there was more room for experimentation. before和was，在主句谓语部分之前，所以应该用过去分词conveyed表过去。

3.主句主语the one word，被表达传达的是enthusiasm，如果将后半句看成是伴随状语是不是不妥？动作不是主语the one word发出的。

是不是应该将enthusiasm看成后置定语？后半句是不是省略了什么？
