虚拟语气的问题

He walked past the pole and soldiers as if they didn’t exist.

高中英语课本（人教版）和一些语法讲义上都指出as if they didn’t exist采用了虚拟语气。

这里是在对过去的事情进行描述，为什么虚拟语气采用一般过去时？可否采用hadn’t existed ？

He walked past the pole and soldiers as if they didn’t exist.
陈述语气难道还要用一般现在时吗？

这是陈述语气。如果改用虚拟语气，则是：

He walked past the pole and soldiers as if they hadn't existed.

无论是陈述语气，还是虚拟语气，as if 从句注定描述的情况不是真实的。

He was singing as if he hadn't had [或 didn't have] a care in the world. 他唱着歌，好像他在人世间没有忧虑。
