as...as...as if 结构分析

In his tweed suit and cloth cap he looked like any other tourist upon the moor, and he had contrived,

that his chin should be as smooth and his linen as perfect as if he were in Baker Street.

1）that his chin should be 中为什么用了should ？为什么不说that his chin was...?

这里用should表示感情色彩“居然，竟然”之意吗？如果是的话，那表示感情色彩的例如形容词等在哪里体现出了呢？

2) 没看懂as smooth and his linen as perfect as if he were in Baker Street. 这里出现了as...as...as if 这样一种结构，麻烦老师分析一下。

3）为什么是more glad,而不是gladder？

1 that从句为目的状语从句。早期英语目的状语从句要用动词原型式虚拟语气，现代英语要用情态动词结构，表示从句谓语表示的不是事实，而只是目的。情态动词用should比用might更为正式一些。

2 比较可以是A在二个方面都与B相同。例如：

Tom is as tall and as strong as John is. 汤姆和约翰一样高，也一样壮实。

比较分句也可以由as if引导：

His face is as pale as if he were ill. 他的脸苍白得就像生病了似的。

这二点结合起来，就是你的句子的结构。

3 glad的比较级和最高级有二种形式，gladder, gladdest 或者more glad, most glad. 其实你只要查词典，自己就能解决问题的。
