despite是介词，之后接动名词短语being on time to the lecture构成介词短语作状语。如果去掉being则是介词短语on time作介词despite的宾语，介词后通常是不接介词短语作宾语的，但有少数介词例外，最常见的有from, until, since, except等。例如：

The sun came forth from behind the cloud. 太阳从云后露出来。

She won’t go home until after the exam. 她要考完试之后再回家。

He cannot spare any time except on Sunday. 除星期日外，他抽不出时间。
