仍然不解介词as与for的问题

At that time， many farmers could only afford bread and butter as their meal.

这是某资料上的一句话，我觉得as应该改为for更为妥当，只是没找到相似例证。

刘老师等曾做过解析，但是由于本人资质愚鲁，到现在还是不懂。还请专家老师多多指导。

as 意为“是”：

bread and butter as their meal

bread and butter 是 their meal 的具体食物。

for 意为“当作”，“用作”：

bread and butter for their breakfast

bread and butter 当作 their breakfast

网友的问题，不可改为 for。
