做伴随为什么用ed不用ing？

各位老师好，下面这个句子里：

They do not gaze alone, scattered widely across the landscape, but together, as a herd.

为什么是scattered不是scattering？不应该是主动分散么？谢谢！

是 gaze（凝视）还是 graze（吃草）? 是人还是羊群？

scatter 可以是及物动词（他动词：被驱散），也可以是不及物动词（自动词：自己散开）。所以，本句用 scattering 或 scattered ，都可以。例如：

I found my books scattering all over the ground. （主动、动作）

I found my books scattered all over the ground. （被动、状态）
