at the top of, on the top of, on top of

要想区别，必须从具体意义和抽象意义两个方面。不能混在一起，否则很难搞清楚。

一、具体意义：在某东西的顶部位置，区别看括号。

1. at the top of the mountain （在山顶附近，在山顶周围。at 意味着“在附近”）

2. on the top of the mountain （在山顶的最顶端。on 意味着“在顶部”）

3. on top of the mountain（意思同2，省略 the， 趋向简练，读着顺口）

二、抽象意义：分别讲解

1. at the top of  在巅峰时期，以最高形式

at the top of his career（在事业的巅峰时期）

at the top of his voice （以声音的最高形式）

at the top of his speed（以速度的最高形式）

2.  on the top of  （无抽象意义）

3. on top of：主要有三种抽象比喻意义。如下：

① on top of sb （对某人有压力）：

All this extra work is getting on top of him. 

这么多的额外工作快使他吃不消了。

② on top of the job （熟练掌握/胜任工作）：

Do you think he's really on top of his job?
你认为他真的能做好他的工作吗？

③ on top of something （除此之外）：

He gets commission on top of his salary.
他除了薪金之外还拿佣金。

       top 用作名词，意思是“顶”、“最高点”，如：at the top of one's voice  （用尽量大的声音），at the top of one's lungs （用尽量大的声音），at the top of one's speed （以最高的速度）等。例如：The student meetings are so noisy that the speaker has to shout at the top of his lungs in order to be heard.  学生大会嘈杂极了，发言人为了使大家能听到，不得不尽量大声喊叫。

      注：上面短语中都有the, 但 on top of 和 on the top of 也都可以说，the 似乎用的时候少。on top （在上面）中没有 the 。例如：The red book is on top and the black one is underneath. 红皮书在上，黑皮书在下。
