我觉得这篇文章中的 lay 应该改为 laid，是 lay 的过去式。如果用 lay，则是 lie 的过去式，而 lie 是不及物动词。请问专家，我的理解对吗？

网友所言极是。我查了一下高考原题，果然是这样。而且在《权威语料库》也选了这个句子：
Obediently, my class lay their heads on their desks, closed their eyes and waited.

很明显，三个并列的谓语动词都是一般过去时。高考题出现这个错误，确实不应该。
既然网友提到了 lie 和 lay 这两个单词，我写了一个“一言辨异”，供网友参考：
The man often lies to others. Once he lay on the floor and lied to his partner, “I laid the gold on the cupboard where it had lain, and it is still lying there.” But in fact the gold doesn't lie where it was once laid.
此人经常对别人说谎。有一次，他躺在地板上，对他的同伴撒谎说：“我把金子放在了它曾经放过的柜子上，它现在还在那里。” 但事实上，金子并没有在它曾经被放过的地方。

理论上、原则上、规范上......，你的理解是对的。但我们要知道，并不是每个老外（包括作家、编辑）都按照字典或规范来写英文，也会有用错字的时候，而我们考试的文章都是基于对外刊的改写，绝对不会纠正老外的用法。体现了一种思维：按照语法规则写的句子，即使语法没问题，老外不一定能懂，而按照老外的习惯来仿写句子，即使语法有点不规范，但老外不会误解。一句话，要犯错，宁肯犯老外一样的错误，也好过中式英文。
这篇完形填空取材于Nina Jackson所写的The Little Book of Music for the Classroom，原文就是用的lay：
Obediently-or out of fear for a teacher who had quite clearly lost the
plot-my unruly class lay their heads on their desks, closed their eyes
and waited. My prayer was answered, for when the music started playing
the room was filled with the most beautiful tones and musical colours I
ever imagined.
