一、网友把和“指代” 的“替代”两个概念混淆了。 that 具有这两种用法。

“指代”，是指“同类事物中的同一个体”。

“替代”，是指“同类事物中的不同个体”。

牢记上面的定义，今后就不会把它的两种用法混了。

网友的三个句子，从语义上很好判断：that 都是替代用法，不是指代用法。所以不能称“that指代......”，应该称“that替代......”。

that 的指代用法最为常见。例如：

He bought a car last year; that was very expensive. （指代用法。that 指 a car）

二、set by that of the other six hostages.，是过去分词短语作 pattern 的定语。变成定语从句就是被动语态：which was set by...

set 的意思是“设置；树立”，意思是“那种模式是由其他6名人质首先用过的”。原句翻译非常好，跟 follow 连用时，意思为“如出一辙”。
