翻译问题
Early this decade he was jobless for a year and recalls how back then, there were “a thousand people applying for every McDonald’s job”.
（译 ：在本世纪初，他失业了一年，回忆起当时，“每一个麦当劳的职位都有1000人申请”。）
decade字典里没有“世纪”的意思，“回忆起当时”用recalls then就好（一般也不与back连用）这里为什么用了how back then ,是不是翻译和原句有问题？

与那翻译没有问题。
Early this decade：本世纪初。（很多语料库中，都是这样理解和翻译的）
recalls 可以接宾语从句。
back then 是个常见搭配。主要意思仍然是 then （那个时候），back 修饰 then, 带有从现在“追溯”的含义。 how 跟 back then 在这里不产生修饰关系，how 是引导there be 宾语从句的，back then 是 there be 从句的时间状语，逗号应删去。
how back then there were “a thousand people applying for every McDonald’s job”
在这里，how 实际上起 that 的作用。又如：
It was boring how he kept complaining to his wife. =
It was boring that he kept complaining to his wife.

文章写于2000年-2009年这十年的后半段的某一年，所以this decade指这十年，early this decade, 这十年的开始几年，也恰好是本世纪初的几年。虽然decade可以翻译为汉语的年代、十年，但你却无法用汉语通顺的表达early this decade. 本年代初？本十年初？二十世纪十年代初？所以只好翻译为本世纪初。decade并没有世纪的意思。能翻译为世纪，纯属巧合。
back then 当时，没有任何问题。
recalls then可能会被误解为“然后回忆” ，recall back then则不可能误读。
