时态一致性问题

Clever as he was, he found it difficult to solve the problem.

这里用过去时是不是不太好？(暗示he现在不clever了?)

我觉得应该用现在时，改成下面这样：

Clever as he is, he found it difficult to solve the problem.

请问我理解得对吗？

为什么它要暗示现在呢？

Tom did sth yesterday. 他昨天有做那sth，但暗示今天他不会做了？
题目句子是简单的时态呼应问题而已。

但这个句子患有流行病，只是很多人不太注意到/或者不知道而已。

Though he was clever,

都是很好的结构，
