downtown 可以是名词、形容词、副词。如果表达“住在城区”，可以用以下几种方式：

He lives downtown. （副词）

He lives in the downtown.（名词。少用）

He lives in downtown Manhattan.（形容词）

严格讲，lives 是谓语动词，介词短语是地点状语。因为可以把介词短语换掉：

live there

live downtown

live with his family
