新概念英语第二册第35课的翻译疑问

我的疑问1：While the battered car was moving away, Roy stopped his bus and telephoned the police.不是应该翻译成：“正当那辆被撞坏的车开走时，罗伊停下车，给警察挂了电话”吗？

我的疑问2：标题stop thieves时抓贼的意思，为什么不是阻止贼？stopped the car 为什么不是阻止汽车？

我的理解是stop即阻止的内容，是需要语境或者上下文的内容来得知的对吗？

While the battered car was moving away, Roy stopped his bus and telephoned the police.

前面翻译正确，后半句中stop和telephone同为过去时，所以是并列关系，拆开就是Roy stopped his bus。Roy telephoned the police. 由并列连词and连成一句后因主语相同省略掉后一个Roy。

如果你要表示挂断电话，应改为Roy stopped his bus and the phone to the police.

stop本身是“停止；阻止”之意，直译为“阻止贼”是没错的，新概念的翻译是具体语境中的意译。大多数翻译都要根据具体语境理解，如果你在街上听到一位女士大喊“stop thief”,你会怎么理解呢？
