韦氏词典上of释义的理解

韦氏词典上例句有这样一个释义

就拿第一个例子来说，the thing指的是country还是Ireland，我认为指的是country，请各位朋友品鉴一下这里的逻辑。

refer to为短语动词，有二个基本用法。

sb refers to sth. 某人提到/提及某事。此时的refer to意为talk or write about sth, 提到、提及。为动态动词。例如：

No one referred to the incident.

Sth refers sth. 某事指的是某事。此时 refer to意为 relate to, 涉及、与...相关。例如：

The word “finch” refers to a kind of bird.

另外二个用法略。

used to indicate the thing that is being referred to 词典的这个释义中is being referred to用了现在进行时被动语态，进行体的使用说明这是动态动词用法，refer to意为提及、提到。

所以这个释义翻译为汉语则为：用来表示（作者或说话人）正在提及的那个事物。

说话人提到了the country. 所以the country 就是正被提及的那个名词。即释义中的the thing就是你的词例中的the country. of引出了Ireland，Ireland就indicates country是哪个country。

Ireland 在 of 的后面。同位关系，先提到的事物一定是在 of 前面的。
