where在名词性从句中不只做状语吗

I don't know where he comes from.

比如这个句子。where并不是做从句的状语吧？

I don't know where he comes from.

where 在从句中作 from 的宾语。 where 相当于 what place

I don't know what place he comes from. （此句是解释用的，会话中不这样说）
