who broke into a church 是主语A thief的定语从句。
because traces of wax…. 是原因状语从句。
原因状语从句的谓语就是我们要填的选项。
“found on his clothes”前后都有逗号，是过去分词短语做wax的后置定语（实际是which was found on his clothes变来的）。
from the sort of candles used only in churches是原因状语从句中的状语。
“used only in churches”过去分词短语做the sort of candles的后置定语。
既然要填的是原因状语从句的谓语，就要有时态语态，排除B、D。结合全句，这个动作一定是发生在主句谓语was caught“被抓”之前，应该选A。
参考译文：
强行闯入教堂行窃的小偷被逮住了，因为在他身上发现的蜡迹是来自教堂专用蜡烛的。

但我们不会说

## 也就是原题句逻辑很不好，结构也非常的扭曲。
