不定式作表语，主语部分含有实意动词do时，不定式通常省略to.

What I did was (to) hide behind the door.

但如果主语部分的实意动词do为进行体，则表语通常用动名词而不是不定式。

What I was doing was hiding behind the door.

同样的道理，介词but，except前有实意动词do时，后接的不定式通常省略to.

I did nothing except (to) hide behind the door.

如果前面的实意动词为进行体，则except的宾语多用动名词。

I was doing nothing except hiding behind the door.
