     翻译软件把这个when翻译为突然, 那应该是副词吧? 这样的话, 它还能作为时间状语从句吗?

    【答】when 引导时间状语从句时，该从句可以放在主句的前面或者后面。在你的句子中，when I thought an ice-cream would be nice 不能放在 I was on the way to the gym  的前面，所以 when 引导的不是时间状语从句。

    《薄冰英语惯用法词典》 认为 when 的这种用法是：表示某事突然发生，相当于 and just at that time， and then , 意思是“正在这时”、“这时突然”等。例如：I was getting up when the bell rang. 我正在起床，铃突然响了。 I was about to start when it began to rain. 我正要动身，这时天突然下起雨来了。

    所以，可以把这种用法的 when 看作是并列连词。
