关于定语从句中含有there is的理解和是否可以去掉

The hands cure quickly, he thought. I bled them clean and the salt water will heal them.

The dark water of the true gulf is the greatest healer that there is. （海明威老人与海）

真正的海湾里的深色水是世上最好的良药。

我的疑惑：

1）句末的定语从句that there is可否去掉？如去掉，含义有何不同呢？

或者说，当出现类似的定语从句that there be句型的时候，究竟要表达什么含义呢？

2）上述句中cure和heal都有治愈的意思，如何区分辨析？

1. cure 和 heal 的主要区别：都可以用作及物动词或不及物动词。不及物时，指“自愈、可治愈”。

cure 的宾语可以是“病人、疾病、创伤”；而 heal 的宾语范围较窄，多指“创伤”。

2. 定语从句 that there is，本身也是一个存在句，目的是把先行词的范围予以限制。如本句译为“世上有的”。如果没有这个定语从句，语法仍然正确，但语义不够完整。存在句把先行词限制在一定的环境里，让先行词成为唯一（最高级），如果没有定语从句，这个最高级显得没有比较范围。

再举二例：

The Nobel Prize is the highest scientific prize that there is, so we should be very proud of that.

Homework has taken up most of my spare time that there is.

一个最高级需要一个限制范围。不要随意删去一个最高级的限制范围。

cure通常指疾病的痊愈或治愈，heal通常指外伤的愈合或治愈，也指心灵创伤的愈合。但在这里作者为了避免重复，而用了近义词，忽略了二者的词义的区别。这是英语的一个特点：尽量避免重复使用同一个词。
