你的理解有二处错误。

第一，（比如老虎机），只有在你赢了游戏，机器才会吐币，而不是游戏结束就吐币。所以原句说的就是事实，并不与事实相反。（你的when the game over 少了谓语动词be )

第二，think后接宾语从句，think是认为的意思。即主语认为从句说的是真的后会发生的。所以，think的宾语从句永远不可能是虚拟语气，永远都要用陈述语气。

这个句子主句thought是委婉用法，在表达个人观点或看法时，用过去时比用现在时显得有礼貌，说话留有余地。由于主句谓语用了过去时，从句的时态根据时态一致的原则也都用了相应的过去时。

I thought the machine would spit out the coins just when you won the game.

以上二句意思和时间指向都是相同的，但第二句采用过去时，显得委婉、礼貌。
