On August 13, 1868, the warship U. S. S. Wateree, anchored in the harbor of Arica, off the coast of what is now northern Chile, rode on the crest of a tsunami (seismic sea wave) and came to rest in the Atacama Desert, some three miles up the coast and almost two miles inland from its initial anchorage.

1 off介词短语修饰anchored，为地点状语。但与in the harbor of Arica并不是并列关系，而是从不同角度描述anchored的同一个地点。in介词短语表示具体地点，而off介词短语表示与另一个地点的相对位置关系。这不是并列关系，不能用并列连词。时间状语也有类似的情况。例如：He died on Sept. 1, 1949, one month before the foundation of the P. R. China. on介词短语表示的是具体死亡日期，是日历时间，而before短语表示死亡时间与另一个事件的相对时间关系。虽然二个短语都是died的时间状语，但二者并不是并列关系，不可以用and连接。

2 some在此为副词，用于数字之前，意为“大约”。
