“爱语法” 网友的理解正确，不过，我觉得翻译略嫌仓促。

我简单说一下我个人的理解：

1.  句首的3个分词短语表示“原因”。从句意上即可看出，这不是问题。

2.  关键词语：apply themselves （to thier studies）指“学习用功”；identify with them 指“认可他们水平相当，在学习上相互促进”。

3.  句子的难点在于这个比较用法：less than。其实，这个也不难理解，就是“前者不如后者，前者的用功程度不及后者”。问题在于 than 后面的这个虚拟句子该怎么理解和翻译。我的意见是：不要直接跟一个虚拟句作比较，应把they would （apply themselves ）if there were good students in class with whom to identify. 这句话单独翻译。在翻译上这叫做“拆译”。最好的结果是：既要看出比较的意思，又要把这个虚拟句的真正含义翻译出来。

我尝试翻译如下：

Surrounded by students who have little interest in acquiring an education, lacking companionship with students who want to learn, and receiving no encouragement at home, these children apply themselves even less than they would if there were good students in class with whom to identify.

【翻译】由于这些孩子的周围都是些对教育不感兴趣的学生，缺少好学的学生作伴，又得不到家庭的鼓励，所以，他们对自己的学业不再用功。相比之下，如果班上有他们认同的好学生并驾齐驱，他们就会努力学习了。
