the matter 是形容词含义，等于 wrong，可以作表语或定语（作定语要后置）。本句作表语。主语是谁？是What。

因为 what 是主语，让这个句子充当宾语从句，语序不变。

Mr. Black asked his son what was the matter with him.

就像 What is wrong with you? What happened to her? 一样，what 作主语。充当宾语从句后，语序依然不变，也没法变！

我看来这个题目要选A，what’s the matter with him. 首先，如果选B. what was the matter with him的话，what was 可缩写为what’s ，A同样可选。其次，实务中表达“你怎么了”时从未见过what is/was the matter with you的情况，都是what’s the matter with you?
