第1题的of which 应该去掉，因为 which 所指不明确。
the rest of ... 剩余的... ( ... 的部分如果是可数名词则看作复数，是不可数名词则看作单数。上下文所指明确时 of 及之后的名词可以省略）：The rest of his money was spent on books. 他剩下的钱花在了书上。/ The rest of the questions were easy. 剩下的问题很简单。（摘自《外研社英汉多功能词典》p.1785）

the rest of 后接不可数名词或是单数形式的名词作主语时，谓语动词用单数；但如果后接可数名词的复数形式作主语时，谓语动词用复数。
the rest of which = the rest of the book
第二句the rest 也是指 the rest of the book
因此，两句都用单数。1.was 2.has proved difficult
