情态动词needn't的用法疑问

请问这里的 this afternoon 是过去还是将来? 为什么选 need't come?

句意：如果你有重要的事要做，今天下午你不必来开会了。

this afternoon是指将来，情态动词可与将来时连用，所以用needn't没问题。
