The old man has three sons. One is in the US, another in in Japan and the other is in Germany.

one,another, the other,最后的the other可以换成another吗，为什么，请举例!

不可以。一个三个，在提及one之后，剩下二个中的某一个是泛指的，所以用another。现在剩下最后一个了，剩下的那个就是唯一的了，是特指的，必须用特指限定词，the other.

不可以，但the other可以换用the third。这里引用费致德《现代英语惯用法词典》一段说明供参考：

【注意】不定数目中的另一个说another。两件东西中的另一个说the other。

三个人、物说one, another (or a second), the third (or the other)。

2008年7月第1版《外研社英汉多功能词典》指出：“在任意列举单数名词时，接连使用one, another, another 等，最后如果还剩一个用 the other，还剩多个用 the others”。
