按照传统语法术语，我重述一遍：

who  she says  was an orphan 这个定语从句本身是个主从复合句，主句为she says, who was an orphan为says的宾语从句。关系代词并不是在定语从句的主句中作成分，而是在定语从句的宾语从句中作了主语。这样的定语从句就叫做嵌入式定语从句，因为关系代词所充当成分的分句 (who was an orphan) 被嵌入到另一个分句（she says)中了。
