How it happened与Why it happened的区别
题目是一段语法填空题:
When the first European ship arrived on Easter Island in 1722, all statues were stading there. Later more and more of them fell down as the years passed. No one knows _______ it happened. The most common idea is that the statues were pulled down in tribal warfare. But no one is sure about it.
这里空格处该是用 How 还是 Why 呢?
① 个人觉得用 How 很合理，这件事是怎样发生的呢？ 后面描述是在战争被摧毁的。
② 老师给的答案是 Why，没说理由。No one knows why it happened. 没人知道这件事情为什么会发生。后面的句子虽然也可以算是前面这件事发生的原因，但是总觉得用 why 不好。
③ 看到网友给的一个例子：一个水晶制作成一个电脑的样子，用 How 发问回答会是“我是先怎么处理水晶，再怎么制作模型等等”， 而用 Why 发问，则是回答“因为这样比较好看/一个展览要用”等等之类的。
所以感觉结合以上3点感觉还是用 How 或者 How / Why 都行? 看美剧上经常出现的也都是 How did that happened? 然后后面就描述事情的经过什么的。
有哪位高人指点一下呀。希望给能出权威出处和例句。万分感谢！！！

我认为你们老师说的是对的。why 在这里表示由某种“原因”而导致的“结果”；how 表示“方式”。
1. 首先分析下面的一个句子：
The teacher scolded Tom. My guess is that he was late again. 老师批评汤姆了。我的猜想是，他又迟到了。
→ Tom was late again. That's why the teacher scolded him. 汤姆又迟到了，所以老师批评他。
“汤姆迟到”是原因，“老师批评他”是结果。故用 That's why。
→ The reason why the teacher scolded Tom is that he was late again.
2. 再来分析你的句子：
It happened. The most common idea is that the statues were pulled down in tribal warfare. 这种情况发生了。最常见的解释是，这些塑像是在部落战争中被推倒的。
→ The statues were pulled down in tribal warfare. That's why it happened.
“塑像在部落战争中被推倒”是原因，“发生这种情况”是结果，故用 that's why。
→ The reason why it happened is that the statues were pulled down in tribal warfare.
