《韦氏词典》将这种how分析为连词，认为相当于that引导从句。但《牛津》则认为还是方式副词。不过当从句谓语为静态动词表示状态时，方式的意味很弱，如果从句作动词宾语，则可以用that替换，句义不变。但that从句不可以作介词宾语。所以当how引导名词性从句作介词宾语，而从句谓语为静态动词表示转态时，可以将how视为连词不作成分，这样更容易理解分句结构。
