1 再问otherwise的用法

FEMALE PROFESSOR: So now, the question is, do we partially restore and rebuild the site before-the entire thing disintegrates?

FEMALE PROFESSOR: It will take a lot of funding to restore it, and, uh, I'm not sure it will be made available. Which would be a pity.

FEMALE PROFESSOR: Even a partly altered site can provide valuable information, which would be lost otherwise。

之前已经问过这个问题了，但是今天看了http://ask.yygrammar.com/q-35075.html，几位老师的精彩解答后，受益匪浅，对自己以前的问题又有了新的理解。

otherwise 为副词用法。表示两个有矛盾、有悖常理的动作（部分遗址被修提供信息，反而最终这些信息还是会遗失）。otherwise 意为“ADV You use otherwise before stating the general condition or quality of something, when you are also mentioning an exception to this general condition or quality”，修饰定语从句的谓语部分would be lost. 在本句的意思是：“即使部分遗址被修提供了宝贵信息，但是最终这些信息还是会遗失。”

如果去掉otherwise，句意虽然没有太大变化，但缺少了这层 “违背常理而故意为之” 的强调用法。

otherwise翻译成最终，有些许转折的意味，表示违背常理。

请问老师，上述理解对吗？

1. You use otherwise before stating the general condition or quality of something, when you are also mentioning an exception to this general condition or quality.

2. 表示两个有矛盾、有悖常理的动作

1 & 2 这两句话，毛线关系都没有。

横线部分读不懂是吧？好像是跟你还是谁讲过 otherwise 可类比数学里的 A 与 Â （非A）

（这个理解好像需要点高一数学集合里的知识？）这就是那横线部分的意思要点； otherwise的英文定义也不好写，他们用了个differently来解释，当然也差不多。
