1. late 作形容词表“晚的；迟的；已故的；最近的”；作副词表 “晚；迟；最近；在晚期”。如：

You're late again. 你又迟到了。

He was laid to rest beside his late wife. 他安葬在亡妻的身旁。

Some late news of the war has just come in.刚刚收到一些有关战争的新消息。

▲ 你的 If you are even 15 minutes late, your friend will get angry. 中的 late 表“迟到”，15 minutes 作状语修饰 late，表“迟到了15分钟”。

Don't come late next time. 下次不要迟到。

2. later 可作 late 的比较级“更迟的；更后的”，也可做副词表“后来；稍后；随后”。如：

My roommate gets up later than I do. 我的室友比我起得晚。

Later he was to become famous as a pacifist. 后来他就变成了一位知名的和平主义者。

A few minutes later, the bomb went off, destroying the vehicle.  炸弹几分钟后爆炸，炸毁了那辆车。
